A project a decade in the making has reached a milestone, with Huia Rugby Club’s existing clubrooms sold and construction of its new home at Sports Park Motueka set to begin.
Committee members Dion Iorns and Willie Snowden say the new clubrooms mark an exciting era for the club as it prepares to celebrate its 125th anniversary in June.
Both have deep roots in Huia, Willie recalling watching their dads play, joining as juniors themselves, and now seeing their own kids come through the ranks.
Dion says the new build will provide a community-focused base for the Huia whānau and strengthen its connection with the wider community.
“This new facility represents more than a building – it’s a commitment to the next generation. We envision a space where young players take their first steps onto the field, families gather to celebrate milestones, and lifelong friendships are forged.”
The new building has been designed as a modern facility that can be used year-round by the Motueka community, creating opportunities for events, meetings, and activities beyond rugby.
“We’re really broad in respect of wider community use. Obviously there’s great field space, but it’s a unique spot with Parklands School – the largest primary school – just there, and Motueka High School right here. It can also be a conference venue, which the town’s pretty short of – at 450 square metres, the options are endless.”
They also see it as a place where parents can grab a coffee while watching junior sport or enjoy a drink later in the day while watching the premier men’s and women’s Kahurangi teams. It hasn’t been an easy road to reach this point, but both say the hard yards have been worth it to secure a new base for their more than 400 members.
“It will be a home that reflects the pride, passion, and resilience of Huia Rugby, ensuring our club thrives for decades to come.”
As construction gets underway, the club wants the entire community to stay engaged and be part of the journey. Fundraising efforts include raffling off a Bays Boating boat last year – something they plan to repeat in 2026.
“Keep an eye out for another chance at that,” Dion says. The pair say there are many people to thank for reaching this point, with a special mention to the Whitwell family for their “incredible” support and assistance with the existing clubrooms. Construction is hoped to be complete by the end of next year.
“We’re locked and loaded. We’re ready to go,” Dion says. After all the hard slog, he’s looking forward to enjoying a beer over the brand-new bar.
While the end is now in sight, it will still take a huge community effort to see the doors opened by the end of next year. The club is seeking expressions of interest from tradies keen to be involved, as well as community members able to donate labour, products, or money to help with costs.
